In the words of ABBA - the great and powerful.
So, this is the first journal I've written in quite a while now. I am writing it to announce that I am in the process of making a portfolio... and not just any portfolio - a California Institute of the Arts application portfolio!! I will be applying for the character animation program. If you want to see much of what will be included in the 'sketchbook' and 'other work' parts of the portfolio, you can find it on my art blog here: thekooksofgadzooksartblog.tumb… . I'll upload all of my sketches and old drawings to my sketches folder and scrapbook here on DA, but there. are. a. TON so it may take a while. I've pretty much yet to begin the observational drawing bit. That's supposed to be the most important aspect and the one I'm most inexperienced with so I'm leaving it 'til last.
The thought has been chewing at my brain for bloody aaages now. Since I first heard of it way back about mid 2010 I think... At first I merely fantasized about being a student at CalArts, but I deemed it much too naive considering I come from a fairly low income family... and uhh... I am a jobless bum though I seek a job with a skip in my step and a smile on my face! So, I decided to settle for Griffith University in Brisbane. I was lucky enough to score an interview with the Head of Animation there, who liked the work I brought along (which was all fully coloured digital work, mostly fan art WHICH I TOLD HER!!) She said she loved it but she wanted to see more sketchy stuff to get a better idea of my process. That was about this time last year. I've been sketching like mad ever since and generally trying to broaden my horizons by experimenting with different styles and mediums in an effort to find my own signature style. I now think the stuff I showed her was crap.
It's both a good thing and a bad thing that nothing in Australia seems to be big or important. I think it's a place to be for relaxing and holidaying. But as far as careers go... especially in the arts.... errrr......... not much goin' on. The only animated stuff we have is ads and a handful of really annoying, boring cartoons. Well there is Animal Logic but... meeehh. It's gotta be America.
So yeah. I was going to settle for that but eventually, after thinking about CalArts began to take up every minute of every day and I found myself looking at the student work for hours, I realized that I at least had to try. And I will. I don't care how long it takes or how many times I have to apply!!! I HaAAaavE a DreEeEaAaaAaAAM !!!
Wish me luck! ^^
I think I sound too much like Rachel Berry right now. Bleh. Apologies. Dx
Again, longer than I intended. Sorry.
